Our History
Following the big wave of immigration during the 50’s and 60’s from Italy and Sicily in particular, Italians worked hard to successfully integrate with the Australian culture. Nevertheless, many felt the need to preserve their cultural identity and long standing traditions from the regions and Towns they left behind.
Among the many Sicilian Towns affected by the emigration to Australia, Vizzini stood out for the massive presence of his former citizens in the Melbourne and Werribee areas. In fact, in the 2nd postwar period, about half of Vizzini’s population moved into the Victoria’s capital.
However, there was not a meeting point where the Immigrants from Vizzini could socialize with each other and in so doing, persevere with their customs and maintain their ties with their town of origin.
It was in this contest that a number of these fellow villagers took steps to establish such meeting point. As a result, on the 23rd September 1969 the Vizzini Social Club was born.
This initiative was welcomed with great enthusiasm by the “Vizzinesi” of Melbourne. So much so that the 1st Dinner Dance, on the 30 December of that year, had an attendance of 870 people, at the Broadmedows Town Hall.
As a result of hard work from many members of the Vizzini Social Club, in 1977 the building of the Coburg Bowling Club was bought by the Club. However, this was an old building requiring a lot of work.
The building was restructured and was finally inaugurated on the 22nd July 1981 with the attendance of many local Authorities, such as the Vice Premier of Victoria Hon. Fordham, the Archbishop of Melbourne Frank Little and the local Member of Parliament and future Prime Minister of Australia Bob Hawke and the Italian Consul Lanfranco Vozzi.
Since then, the premises of the Vizzini Social Club have been attended by many distinguished personalities such as Ministers, Members of Parliament, Ambassadors, Mayors and Religious Authorities.
It is impossible to list all the social and cultural events that have taken place at the Club’s premises. Among the major events is worth mentioning is the celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the death of Dr, Gesualdo Costa, Legendary medic of Vizzini who was also a philanthropist, humanist and member of the Italian Parliament.
Obviously, the most celebrated citizen of Vizzini was and still is Giovanni Verga, whose name has been given to the main hall of the club. He was a famous novelist, play writer and Senator of the then Kingdom of Italy.
The Vizzini Social Club has been hosting regular social activities such as Weekly Bingo sessions and Dinner Dances.
The Club Premises can also be hired for Conferences, Dinner Dances and other social activities.
The last Friday Members & Guests social night for the year will be FRIDAY 20TH DECEMBER. After the NYE dinner dance the club will close for the summer holidays and reopen on FRIDAY 31ST JANUARY, 2025
